Rawk: Painless log analysis
Chris Hobbs' Rails Analyzer with Klass, or Rawk, is a painless rails log analyzer. Its a great tool to keep on hand. I know there is a significant difference between my perception of my projects, and other peoples (users, girlfriend, etc.). Additionally, I am almost always looking at my projects through a localhost connection, and I am unclear about the actual, real-life speed of the projects. Anyway, it is always good to get some hard facts, and even better if they are easy to get at.
With Rawk, I can garner my real world speeds in a couple of seconds, to remind myself that everything is working as it should. I also have a list of my slowest actions, and can start my optimization efforts there (or call them good enough).
Best of all, its Beerware, as in if you like it, buy yourself a beer. Since I am still at work, I think I'll make it a coffee.
Another quick log analyzer comes from Caboose. This little one-liner will print your page render times from your logs from slowest to fastest
cat log/development.log | grep Completed | awk '{ print "[" $3 "] - " $0}' | sort -nr | more
